Schools

Great teaching, as well as raw student talent, is needed to shape the work of the next generation of car designers. As part of the Car Design Awards Global, there is also an award for the school whose students have achieved the most success in this year's competition. It is a recognition of the performance of the school, and the award will be presented to the head of school or course leader whose students scored the highest in the competition.

The League Table below compiles student successes over the past five years of the competition. Below it is what we have called the Winning Index, which rates schools for the number of finalists - there are typically only three for each of the awards each year - that they have produced for the competition.

 How the scoring works

The league tables count the shortlisted students from the annual Car Design Awards Global competition over the period 2011-15 inclusive.

A student is shortlisted for an Award if he or she receives the vote of at least one judge in the initial round of assessment of all the entries. For each shortlisted student, we have awarded their school one point in the league table.

If a student became a finalist, meaning the typically three who received the most judges' votes in each category, the school gains 3 points. The judges then re-examine the work of these students, and one of them is selected as the winner to receive the award in that category (there are between 6-10 categories per year). The school receives 5 points for each winner.  At the conclusion, the judges chose the work of one of the category winners to be the overall student design of the year. He (we have yet to see a woman as overall winner) earns the school 8 points.

Points are not cumulative, so for example a winner's points are 5, and do not include the 1 and the 3 for being shortlisted and becoming a finalist. An entry by a team of students is scored only once. And a student shortlisted for a number of awards categories in one year has only his/her best result counted; the competition is seeking to measure quality of entries, not volume.

A student achieving success in different years' competitions, however, is counted in each year and so contributes towards the school's overall score over the period of the league table. The rationale here is that there has clearly been some teaching in between.

For the Winning Index, only those schools which have produced at least three students who have become finalists are included.
